Deployment: Your Rack

Your rack is the only space that you have on the ship. Make it your area.

You’re going to want comfort and coziness in order to relax, decompress, and actually get some restful sleep.

Below is ways to improve your rack, as well as essential items to have in it.

Update your rack’s bedding & Comfort

Your rack’s comfortability is a key component to getting good sleep and decompressing after long days. I can’t stress how essential having a comfortable rack is while on a long deployment.

Heating, Cooling, lighting

You will end up in different environmental extremes on deployments. To remain comfortable, especially in your rack while you sleep, I recommend a heating/cooling system.

As well as some lighting to make your rack more “homey” and give you the ability to read and do things even when it’s dark.

Phone chargers and multi-outlet cords

Deployments take you around the world, I recommend always packing an universal power plug adapter. You’ll also want to include extra chargers for all electronics, & a multi-outlet extension cord to charge multiple things at once.

Air freshener & disinfectant

Your rack can start to feel dirty and smelly — here’s things that I used to combat that.

Take care of your uniform

With frequent inspections, you have to take care of your uniform. Here’s the essentials to have in your rack to make sure you’re able to do that.

Storage

Don’t underestimate the importance of storage options for your rack.
