5 Essentials For Day To Day
Having good quality basics can make every day a little bit better, I know from experience.
This was a big lesson I learned first time a shipmate suggested I try 5.11 brand instead just using pants I was issued. As soon as I got some of my own, I saw how big of a difference it makes.

A day to day basic you may not think about. But day to day when you wake up and put your pants on— you’ll notice the difference in this quality, rip resistant belt.
2. A multitool & Flashlight
There’s two things to keep in mind when purchasing these: keep it small so its easy to carry with you, & make sure your flashlight is rechargeable.
You may be surprised how helpful this is to have on your person throughout the day. I prefer the Gerber brand, specifically the first recommendation on the list— I still use and carry it to this day.
3. Quality under clothes
It can be easy to belittle the importance of making sure you have good underclothes.
Brands can of course be a preference thing— however, I highly recommend being sure to replace underclothes as they get holes or start to get old.
If you work in a cold weather climate, make sure to get some warm socks and long johns! Being stationed in Washington, these were very essential in the winder and on cold deployments.
4. Large Military Tactical Backpack
I never went a day without using my backpack. Because I got high quality bag, this is another item I still use to this day.
I own the first recommended backpack, but there are other highly rated options too. Mine has lots of storage and I loved the ability to add patches on the outside.
5. Some sort of watch
Depending on your budget, you could go a few ways with this. I personally loved my Apple Watch and know of many people who love their Samsung watch as well.
A simple watch will do just fine too—but I couldn’t go a day without a watch of some sort on my person, from deployment to shore duty.
I learned the hard way that if you don’t protect your watch, it’ll end up broken. I don’t have to tell you that durability is an important quality to have in your gear.
I found that getting a case for the Apple Watch made the world of difference.
