Deployment: Official “Nice To Have” List

In the deployment packing list for the Navy provided on the government website, they include a “nice to have” section. These are things that in my opinion, are good necessities to bring.

Below you will find links to everything you need for this list.

BY USING THE LINKS PROVIDED ON OUR PAGE, YOU ARE SUPPORTING THE SALTY RACK SO WE CAN CONTINUE TO GROW & OFFER RESOURCES TO SERVICE MEMBERS AND THEIR FAMILIES.

Nice to have

1.Thermos or leak proof travel mug

These are great for day to day life and deployment. I used mine everyday. I advise having one for water and one for coffee. Another popular item is a shaker bottle for your protein or super green shake.

2. Small multi-outlet cord

You’ll have multiple things that will need to be charged at the same time — don’t forget a multi-outlet cord. Also, pack extra chargers for your phone, electronics, etc.

3. Command Strip hooks/hangers

You have limited storage, this is a good way to help organize your locker & rack.

4. Sewing Kit

Our gear gets heavy use. Buttons will pop off, zippers will break — and you’ll need to be able to repair it. Make sure you pack one of these.

5. Para Cord

I was aviation boatswain mate handler (ABH). While on deployment, some friends would make lanyards and keychains for whistles and lock keys.

6. Powdered drink mix

Staying hydrated is very important, these helped me take care of myself and felt like a treat in the midst of deployment. These are easy to store, quick to use, & good to have in your pocket.

7. One comfort item, e.g. family photo

Polaroid proved to be a nice way to have family photos to hang in my rack, as well as to take photos during my time deployed.

8. Reading material/e-reader/tablet

You’ll be really happy you brought reading materials.

9. Chewing Gum

10. a few Ziploc bags, assorted sizes

11. Moleskin/Leukotape

12. Duct tape

13. Stamps (Forever), postcards or paper and envelopes

Your family will be so happy to hear from you, letters are a great way to stay in touch. Make sure you bring the materials necessary— here’s what you’ll need.

14. Collapsible electric kettle

I’m one of those people who can’t go without their coffee in the morning. I found that on an aircraft carrier, you can’t always find coffee everywhere. These are good options for coffee and tea drinkers— compact and simple to use. The kettle is good to have on hand for things like oatmeal as well.
